Good versions of Althea and Franklins Tower |
I love both of these songs, especially Althea. Anybody have any smokin versions of either? I have ones from 10-10-1980 at the Warfield which are really good too and some later versions performed by PL and Friends that are really good. But anyone got any other schorchers with Jerry?

Re: Good versions of Althea and Franklins Tower |
My fave ALTHEA of all time is 5-1-81 Hampton, VA.
There's an excellent AUD of that show (better than the SBD) on this site, but be forewarned that the last time I DL'd it, there was a skipping problem during Jerry's final guitar outro that completely ruins the experience.
I don't know if this issue has been resolved or if it was just an error on my recordng end of things, but I would definitely at least try to get this version.
For Frankli's, i'm still partial to the killer version from the "One from the Vault" CD from their SF concert in 1975, but if you already have that try the 1977 Boston Garden show for an unreal Help-Slip-Franklin's.

Franklin's: 5/9/77 buffalo has the best jerry-work but 6/9/77 and 2/26/77 have better grooves IMHO
Althea:6/12/91 is my fav. jerry just keeps uping the intensity
also 10/14/83 is a good one....dp 10? i think

Re: Good versions of Althea and Franklins Tower |
My Favorite Franklin's Towers were played on back to back nights ( actually back to back sets) in Cape Cod, one is 17 minutes the other is 18 minutes long. Usually we would not be thrilled to hear the same song twice in two nights, but these versions were so exceptional that no-one complained. Check out the Dancin > Franklin's ( over 30 minutes long) from set II 10-27-79 and the Half Step > Franklin's(again over 30 minutes) from set I 10-28-79, you won't be dissappointed!!

Re: Good versions of Althea and Franklins Tower |
I've loved the Althea from 3-15-90 Cap Center included on the Without A Net and Terrapin Station releases. Jerry's tone is just perfect and that solo still givve me chills. As for Franklin's I like 12-12-78 Miami out of Half Step.

Re: Good versions of Althea and Franklins Tower |
Hello 'caspervapors" -- though you posted this earlier this year, I just found it. "Franklin's" is probably my favorite song and I have two recommendations:
1979-10-27 (Cape Cod Coliseum) 2nd set opened with Dancin' (yes, Dancin'!)> Franklin's = first time they ever performed the combo and it sounds from the transition that it was not pre-arranged (only did it twice after) Jerry jams after every first and then check out what happens after the last verse: they take off and seem to hit a plateau,Jerry gives the guys time to get back on the same page and then they go straight for the heavens -- I have yet been able to find a truly great mix but it is on the site.
Robert Hunter's "Box of Rain" cd -- completely different "feel" to the tune than Jerry's interpretation. --- has a "mysterious" quality to it and I believe it is worth the listen.
